Sleep. Is it really necessary?

Sleep is indeed not a luxury as our hard-working, caffeine-driven society might have you believe. I can still remember going on 2-4 hours of sleep for the first 7 months of my daughter's life and thinking that there isn't enough coffee in the world to make me feel refreshed (there wasn't!). Once I was able to get her sleeping, I was then able to get myself sleeping. It transformed my life so much so that I became a sleep consultant to do the same for other exhausted moms like myself.
Sleep. A time when the body is relatively still, yet the brain is highly active. An irony in a way. During sleep, the brain's nerve cell’s are rewired helping us to process and retain new information. Sleep essentially helps us learn and when we don't get enough sleep, we don't retain newly learned information nor is our attention/focus as sharp as it can be. Lack of sleep boosts the part of the brain affected by depression, anxiety andother psychiatric disorders while adequare sleep helps our brain to regulate mood and cope with what the next day may bring. Research suggests that when sleep deprived, the body produces fewer infection-fighting antibodies making one more susceptible to catching a cold/illness. This is certainly not an exhaustive list of the effects of sleep deprivation, but it should give you a greater understanding of the importance of sleep.
